This is another case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. An OFW, Jethro Pioquinto, 36 yrs. old, was arrested on August 3, 2019, after being mistaken by the Hong Kong Police as one of the protesters. He happened to pass by a group of protesters and unfortunately, he was wearing a black t-shirt too at that time. The protesters were all wearing black and so the police thought he was one of them. The OFW is working at Disneyland, Hong Kong.
Jethro’s friend posted his plight on social media. He said that his friend was arrested but he was not at all one of the protesters. He just happened to pass by Mongkok at that time. The police strike him down followed by the arrest. A group of lawyers who helped the protesters said that Pioquinto was brought to the NPPS (North Point Police Station) in Hong Kong Island. A spokesperson of the group claimed that bringing Pioquinto in NPPS is against the law because the arrest happened in Mongkok which is in the Kowloon Peninsula. It is where the arrested protesters must be brought.
The lawyers and Piquinto’s friends are asking help and assistance from the Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, a netizen gave a piece of advice for OFWs in Hongkong. She said that they should avoid passing by the locations that there is an ongoing protest. They should also avoid wearing black especially if they will pass by places that protests or rally are happening.
In the past months, the once peaceful Hong Kong has been bombarded with protests because they don’t want to become a part of Mainland China again. It’s widely known that in China, the rights of people are not acknowledged and there had been news of the disappearance of dissidents and jailing of pro-democracy protesters.
